Angles captured. Two from above showing the depressed cap and a raised umbo of adhering debris, one standing profile, one showing the upturned cap and gills.
Morphology
Cap 10–12 cm, greyish brown to olive-buff, paling toward a whitish margin, broadly convex then becoming deeply funnel-shaped with age; surface dry and slightly matted, centre darker and roughened. Gills white to cream, close, adnate, brittle. Stipe short, thick, pure white, chalky.
Habitat & substrate
Oak and beech litter on level ground, low green herbs and saplings nearby. Solitary, terrestrial.
Lookalikes & what rules them out
Grey-brown Russula and Lactarius overlap heavily from above. The white chalky stipe favours Russula.
To confirm this identification
Latex check and spore print. Note whether the flesh greys or blackens on cutting — that would point toward the R. nigricans group.
