Leccinum sp. Genus
Angles captured. Ten frames — six in situ from several angles, then four with the mushroom lifted to show the pore surface, stipe and base.
Morphology
One fruitbody photographed in situ and then lifted. Cap 6–8 cm, rich brick to orange-brown, dry, convex with an overhanging margin. Stipe whitish and conspicuously roughened with dark scabers. Pore surface pale cream to buff, finely pored, clear in the two frames where it is held.
Habitat & substrate
Leaf litter and moss on a slope with hay-scented fern. Ectomycorrhizal, probably with birch or aspen.
Lookalikes & what rules them out
Orange cap plus dark scabers on a pale stipe is Leccinum and little else. Species depends on the tree partner and on how cut flesh discolours.

Identify the nearest tree, and cut one — Leccinum flesh often greys or blackens in a diagnostic sequence.
Notes
Corrected. Briefly split into two entries on the assumption that the litter frames and the fern frames showed different fruitbodies. They are one mushroom, picked up and carried a short distance. The clearest bolete genus call of the day.
