Morphology

Cap 6–8 cm, pale ochre and finely speckled with darker flecks, dry, broadly convex. Pore surface bright chrome yellow, finely pored, lobed at the margin. Stipe pale, stout, reddish-brown toward the base.

Habitat & substrate

Leaf litter and moss under mixed hardwood with evergreen groundcover.

Lookalikes & what rules them out

A speckled pale cap over bright yellow pores fits Boletus, Hortiboletus or Aureoboletus. The reddish stipe base is the most useful feature shown.
